See Ladakh from the sky or see it by road, there are just a handful of places in India that invoke such strong appreciation for natural beauty. Once the capital of the Ladakhi Kingdom, Leh is a bustling mountain town with bazaars, Tibetan style forts, surrounded by rocky mountains. Take it easy on your first day here as you will need to acclimatise to the high altitude of the region.
Leh - Stok, Matho & Stakna
Today we spend the day sightseeing. You will be visiting some of Leh's most beautiful monasteries; Shey Palace, Thikshey and Hemis monasteries Shey Palace, situated on a hillock, was once the residence of the royal family and it was constructed by the first king of Ladakh. Later, drive to Thiksey Monastery, considered as the most beautiful monastery in Ladakh. The day ends with a visit to Hemis monastery, the largest monastery complex in Ladakh.
Leh - Shey, Thiksey, Hemis
Your Ladakh journey continues with navigating the contours of the rocky mountains of the region. After breakfast, make way for Stok Palace (6137 meters altitude), the residence of the royal family since 1840. Drive to 16th-century old Matho monastery belonging to one of the last red-hat sects of Ladakh. The monastery houses 400-year-old artifacts and many shrines can be found around it. Carry on to Stakna Gompa, 13 Kms away from Matho before heading back to your hotel.
Leh - Khardung la - Nubra Valley (Hunder)
Leave today with your VAYU chauffeur for Hunder (Nubra Valley) through Khardung La Pass (5602 m) - World's highest motorable road. Stop a while for a photo shoot and continue to Nubra Valley. Nubra is a tri-armed valley located to the north east of Ladakh. The Shyok River meets the Nubra River to form a large valley that separates the mountain ranges of Ladakh and Karakoram. The average altitude of the valley is about 3048 metres and is known for its unparalleled stargazing experience in India.
Nubra - Leh
Also known as the 'Desert in the Sky', Hunder is a small village where the river Shyok and Nubra meet. Famous for the camel rides among the never-ending sand dunes, the Bactrian Double-humped camels are a reminder of a bygone era of the Silk Route. Spend the day taking in the sights and enjoy a camel ride.
Leh - Likir - Alchi - Uleytokpo
Drive back to Leh by the same route via Khardung La pass.
Uleytokpo - Lamayuru - Kargil
The drive to Pangong Lake in the morning passes through Ladakh's beautiful countryside. The azure blue lake is spread over 100 km and over 2 countries, one-third of it in India and two-third in Tibet. Situated at an altitude of 4250 meters, Pangong lake is a spectacular spot to camp overnight and one can rent a tent around the lake.
Kargil - Rangdum
In the morning enjoy a photo session around the lake before heading back to Leh today.
Rangdum - Padum
After breakfast leave for Uleytokpo, known to have the best camping spots in the region. En-route visit Likir Gompa and continue to Alchi monastery before reaching Uleytokpo by lunch. Enjoy the evening beside the river banks and take in the sights.
Leave Uleytokpo after breakfast for Lamayuru monastery. One of the oldest monasteries's in the region, built around the same time as Alchi monastery, Lamayuru monastery houses a rich collection of paintings and Thangkas. Head on to the second biggest town in the Ladakh region after Leh, Kargil. The site of armed conflict between India and Pakistan in 1999, now is a haven for adventure enthusiasts interested in beautiful treks and mountaineering opportunities.
Padum - Rangdum
An important base station for many adventure activities like trekking, skiing, river rafting, mountaineering and camping. Spend the day in the local markets shopping for Kashmiri handicrafts and visit Mulbek monastery. Later, make way for one of the most isolated places in Suru Valley, Rangdum.
Rangdum - Kargil
Home to 18th century Rangdum monastery and a popular night stop for trekkers, picturesque Rangdum is conveniently located between Kargil and Padum. A plateau in the mountains, on one side it has beautiful green mountains and rock encrusted, glacial mountains on the other.
Kargil - Leh
After breakfast, start your day with sightseeing. Visit Karsha, the largest and most important monastery of the Zanskar region 14 km from Padum. Later on, drive to Stongdey monastery. Finally, visit Zangla before staying the night in Padum.
After you are done taking in the sights at Padum, leave at your own pace for Rangdum during the day.
